Sustainable Biofuels – From Wood to Energy
Can we use trees as airplane fuel? What role do enzymes play in the production of biofuels? Are all types of biofuel sustainable? What factors can influence biofuel’s effect on the environment?

In this module, students will study two of the steps in biofuel production: enzymatic degradation of wood to sugar, and fermentation of sugar to fuel (ethanol). The students will also evaluate and discuss biofuels from a sustainable perspective; how to best serve communities with processing facilities. This module is suitable for ages 16 - 18.

Electrical Energy: Renewable and Non-Renewable Sources

How does the world get its energy?  What kind of electricity powers our lives? In this module, students will learn and experience how to produce electrical energy from renewable energy sources, such as water and wind.

Students will also learn about non-renewable electrical energy sources by exploring how a steam engine works. This important information will kick-start understanding of how electricity affects our resources and our future. This module is designed for students aged 13 - 16.
