The Mobile Newton Room visits Oslo for the first time

19 Mar 2026

For the first time, the Mobile Newton Room is coming to Oslo. For three weeks, 8th grade students, from Oslo schools will be offered the opportunity to take part in the mathematics module “Up in the Air with Numbers.

OSLO/NORWAY: From 8 April, the Mobile Newton Room will be located outside Norwegian Defence Museum at Akershus Fortress. Here, students from Oslo schools will explore mathematics through aviation and technology in a classroom unlike any other.

Over the course of three weeks, 8th grade students will take part in the Newton module “Up in the Air with Numbers.” This is a hands-on learning experience where mathematics, technology and aviation come together in a real-world context. Among other activities, students will carry out an observation flight in flight simulators, using mathematical calculations to plan and complete their mission.

The Mobile Newton Room is a fully equipped, expandable classroom built inside two specially designed shipping containers. The concept has been developed to bring high-quality STEM education directly to students, regardless of geography or infrastructure.

Local teacher from Oslo

– The students’ day is divided into two parts, with half the day spent in the Newton Room and the other half visiting the museum. We have been fortunate to recruit an excellent science teacher, Siv Andrea Gulaker, who is a science teacher. She will first receive training as a Newton Teacher and will then teach the school groups visiting from lower secondary schools across Oslo during these weeks. She will be supported by flight instructors who ensure that the simulator flights run smoothly, says Ørjan Snoen from the Newton administration.

– An invitation has been sent to all 8th grade classes in Oslo. There are many schools in the city, but we still have a few available days. If this sounds interesting for your students, please get in touch, he adds.

Founder and CEO of FIRST Scandinavia, Per-Arild Konradsen, is looking forward to bringing the classroom to Oslo.

– Since its launch in Lugo, Spain, in 2019, the Mobile Newton Room has travelled across Europe, visiting countries such as France, Ireland, England, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, inspiring thousands of students along the way. Now we are finally able to do the same here in Norway.

– This gives us a unique opportunity to demonstrate what Newton is in practice and to give children and young people in the capital the chance to experience an outstanding education module, he says.

The visit to Norway is the result of a long-term partnership between Boeing and FIRST Scandinavia. Boeing is the foundation’s global STEM partner (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

In Oslo, the project is carried out in close collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Museum and Norwegian as local partners.
