Mobile STEM Classroom takes flight in Germany

07 dic 2023

Boeing partnered with Newton to let the Mobile Newton Room take flight in Germany. The mobile classroom landed in Henstedt-Ulzburg, just outside Hamburg. With the Boeing Distribution Services GmbH warehouse in Schleswig-Holstein as a backdrop, students aged 13 to 16 got an immersive educational experience from November 30th to December 7th.

The Newton module, "Up in the Air with Numbers," focuses on the intersection of aviation and mathematics. This module, conducted in German, guided students in using mathematics to calculate a flight plan for a simulated rescue mission. The next step involved executing their flight plan using cutting-edge flight simulators.

For this project, volunteer Boeing employees from different sites in Germany were specially trained as Newton Teachers, who led the sessions, and flight simulator instructors, ensuring students had a hands-on and unforgettable experience in STEM subjects. Students also got a chance to see inside the Boeing facility during their day at the Mobile Newton Room.

“Having the Mobile Newton Room in Henstedt-Ulzburg was a great opportunity for us to give back to the community and to introduce young kids to our fascinating industry. The Newton Room project was a powerful example of how we invested in future talent, and I hope this week’s participants will consider aviation for their future career paths.” said Bernd Niewels, Managing Director, Boeing Distribution Services GmbH.

Alysia Tofflemire, Executive Director of Newtonroom gGmbH, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "We were excited to bring the Newton learning experience to Germany again with Boeing. With the Mobile Newton Room, we provided visiting students and teachers with new educational programs and methods to stimulate curiosity, motivation, and appetite for STEM learning. It was also very special for us to run this project close to our office in Berlin, and we hoped to not only have a positive impact here in Schleswig-Holstein but eventually throughout Germany."

The Mobile Newton Room in Henstedt-Ulzburg marks the second Newton project in Germany through the Boeing-FIRST Scandinavia partnership. This initiative builds on the success of permanent Newton Rooms established in six European countries: Norway, Denmark, Scotland, Spain, France, and Poland. Over 373,000 children have benefited from the hands-on and interactive Newton experience across Europe.
