The first day of the Newton Summit is complete. People from over 30 countries participated in the plenary session, and all three seminars on day 2 are fully booked.
“We are positively overwhelmed that the Newton Concept was able to attract so many participants from so many countries today,” says Stian Elstad, general manager of the foundation FIRST Scandinavia. “This is the first time that our annual conference has been fully virtual, and the first day was a great success, he continues.”
The Newton Summit is hosted by FIRST Scandinavia in partnership with Boeing, and organized and broadcasted from Bodø, Norway.
Norwegian minister impressed by concept
“It is inspiring to see that the concept, which originated from an arctic city in Norway, now has a foothold in multiple countries all over the world.”
These were the words of Guri Melby, Norwegian Minister of Education and integration, as she opened the conference.
She and eleven other speakers contributed with inspiring speeches and remarks, and for two hours they focused on the Newton Concept and the importance of STEM education.

EU STEM Coalition calls for Exponential Education
Many of the speakers are big names in the EU STEM field.
Among others, participants at the Summit heard from Themis Christophidou, Director-General, DG EAC, European Commission, and Hans van der Loo, Ambassador of the EU STEM Coalition.
Ms. Christophidou spoke about STEM education and its role in the European Education Area and the Digital Education Action Plan.
“The Newton Concept is an impressive one, and one that we need now more than ever,” said Ms. Christophidou. “STEM competences are one of the central pillars on which to build a digital, greener future.”
“In this day and age, where youngsters are spoiled with visuals and gamification, I commend Newton Rooms. Not only for providing inspirational classrooms, but also for the ways of making it available for as many young people as possible,” remarked Hans van der Loo in his keynote speech, titled “Education in an Exponential Era – Fit for the Future ?”.
On day two of the summit, there are three seminars focusing on detailed topics in the Newton Concept. These informational sessions are all fully booked, but they will be posted
on the Newton Summit page afterwards.
