Newton is coming to Japan for the first time. This August, children and families at Narita International Airport will be invited to explore aviation and energy through flight simulators, engineering challenges and practical experiments.
TOKYO/JAPAN: Newton in a Box will be open from 1 to 23 August 2026 in the area before security screening. The free event is open to everyone, including visitors who are not travelling by air.
Practical STEM activities
Newton in a Box is a portable event that offers parts of the activities that take place in Newton Rooms, developed to bring engaging STEM activities to new locations.
The activities at Narita Airport will focus on aviation and energy. Local volunteers will guide participants as they explore scientific principles through practical experiments and challenges.
June, Axel, Ørjan and Ole Morten Mortensen from FIRST Scandinavia are travelling to Tokyo this week.
A team from FIRST Scandinavia is now travelling to Tokyo to set up the full learning area and train the local volunteers. Project Manager June Moltubakk will be joined by Ørjan Snoen, Ole Morten Mortensen and Axel Storli.
The team from Bodø will spend almost two weeks in Tokyo preparing the area ahead of the opening.
“This is a very exciting project. We are looking forward to getting started at the airport and to giving the volunteers thorough training, so that the children and families visiting the area have a positive experience. The volunteers include students, pilots, technicians and other engaged adults from the local area,” says June Navjord Moltubakk, International Partner Manager at Newton.
An international partnership
Newton in a Box at Narita Airport is made possible through a partnership between FIRST Scandinavia, Boeing, Narita International Airport and the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences.
In the joint press release announcing the event, representatives from the four partner organisations commented on the significance of bringing Newton in a Box to Japan.
