In this module, pupils will explore what green skills are and take part in a group project. Pupils will plan, build and pitch for a water pipeline construction project for a hospital development, exploring the skills required at different stages of the project.

In this module pupils will explore the skills that are important during a major project and how these skills can be used at different stages. They will use scientific principles to understand the environmental considerations of their project. They will work together in groups to plan their project, balancing the costs, environmental impact and public relations. They will build and test their route before putting together a pitch/tender. Overall, they will explore and recognise the skills used in industry and its career opportunities.

Pupils will work in groups of 4 for the duration of the workshop.

The module consists of 4 activities:

Activity 1: Survey Stage. In groups, pupils will work around 5 stations, each with a short experiment to gather information relevant to their project. These stations include rock, water and soil sampling, species identification, carbon retention of trees.

Activity 2: Project Planning. The team will use their town map to plan their water pipeline route from a given start point to the site of the new hospital. This will require the team to discuss the best route, calculate the costs and balance their environmental impact and public impression.

Activity 3: Build and test. Upon completing their project plan the group will be asked to build a scale model using copper pipes. Their work is then tested with water to see if their construction is watertight.

Activity 4: Project Pitch. The team will work together to create a pitch for the project. They will present their pitch to the group including teachers and newton presenter who will score their efforts and award one group the tender.
