04 Dec 2019

For three weeks over 1,197 people participated in the Newton learning experience in Spain.
FIRST Scandinavia’s Mobile Newton Room, an innovative tool to demonstrate the Newton concept, was placed in Lugo, Spain for three weeks to allow students, teachers, and the local population to experience STEM education in an inspiring environment.

This is the Newton Concept

Over 1,197 people participated in the Newton learning experience, and a total of 3,342 hours were spent in the air using flight simulator panels.

– With this type of activities, we intend to increase the interest of children and youth in STEM careers, specially the ones linked to aerospace and aeronautics, as well as to disseminate the Initiative to the society at large said Director of the Innovation Agency Patricia Argerey Vilar.

Highly satisfied
339 students completed the educational module «Up in the Air with Numbers», where they learned mathematical concepts related to aviation by converting units, creating a flight plan, and executing their route on flight simulator panels.

Both students and visiting teachers were highly satisfied with the program; 90% of the visiting teachers gave a 5-star rating to the Mobile Newton Room.

Local teachers
The education was led by local teachers from AS Mercedes, the Professional Education Center in Aerospace Maintenance in Lugo. Students and visitors received flight simulator instructions from teachers appointed by the Galicia based STEM organization KidCode. Both the teachers and flight simulator instructors received training by Newton staff. « It was a great opportunity to get the chance to teach about something I really like, which is the world of aviation» said one of the Newton teachers.

– The mobile Newton room is part of the Civil UAVs Initiative program to promote scientific and technological vocations. This Initiative aims to develop an industrial and technological pole on unmanned vehicles in our region, and counts on collaborators such as Boeing, Vilar ends.

The project was made possible by Boeing  and the local partner Xunta de Galicia with support from the Galician Innovation Agency and Concello de Lugo.
