Ready to deliver “Up in the Air with Numbers” in Oslo

31 Mar 2026

Here is the team who will be teaching Oslo students the Newton Module over the coming weeks.

OSLO/NORWAY: Last week, Newton’s Educational Specialist Ørjan Snoen, travelled to Oslo together with Tom Hansen to train a Newton Teacher and three flight simulator instructors.

Siv Andrea Gulaker is a lower secondary school teacher (Year 9) at Teglverket School in Oslo and will serve as the Newton Teacher during the three weeks in Oslo. She is a science and mathematics teacher with several years of classroom experience.

“Normally, we provide three days of training for Newton Teachers, but in this case we were able to reduce the scope. This is partly because we have such an experienced and highly skilled science teacher from the Oslo school system. Siv is a great example of how important a competent and confident teacher is in Newton. With her background, we were able to focus our training on discussing curriculum, teaching principles and pedagogy. Teaching is clearly her strength! I’m confident that the students visiting the Mobile Newton Room in Oslo are in the very best hands,” says Ørjan.

Ole Tobias Bastiansen, Ida Brathen and Harald Usterud will be the flight simulator instructors during the programme. They come from different professional backgrounds but are all affiliated with the Norwegian Defence Museum. None of them had prior experience with flying or flight simulators.

“Of course, prior experience can be an advantage, but it’s important to remember that we are not training pilots. The flight the students will carry out is relatively simple, and what really matters is that the instructors have strong communication and facilitation skills. When it also turned out that all three picked up the technical aspects quickly, it proved to be an excellent match.”

Tom Hansen, who led the training, was very pleased with his three trainees:

“All of them performed at a level that is among the best I have seen in this type of training.”

In just a week, this team will be leading the teaching in Oslo, and the students will be in excellent hands.
