Modules

The teaching plan in a Newton Room is called a Newton module
The modules form an important mainstay of the Newton Concept. Those who join the network have access to a library of approved modules.

A Newton module has a fixed structure:

  • Pre-work in the classroom
  • Practical teaching in the Newton Room
  • Post-work in the classroom

The modules are rooted in the current curriculum, and they follow the Newton principles for quality education.

A Newton Room offers education within science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

All Newton Rooms can develop their own modules or make local adjustments where necessary. The Newton administration helps in the development process, and all new modules are quality-assured by external professionals before being shared in the Newton network.
Here is a sample of some of the exciting modules we provide to the Newton network!

Sustainable Biofuels – From Wood to Energy
Can we use trees as airplane fuel? What role do enzymes play in the production of biofuels? Are all types of biofuel sustainable? What factors can influence biofuel’s effect on the environment?

In this module, students will study two of the steps in biofuel production: enzymatic degradation of wood to sugar, and fermentation of sugar to fuel (ethanol). The students will also evaluate and discuss biofuels from a sustainable perspective; how to best serve communities with processing facilities. This module is suitable for ages 16 - 18.

Action: Rescue Mission – Block Programming with WeDo 2.0
A landslide has blocked a local road! Can robots help us? The robots Milo, Berta, and Hulk will help with search, rescue, and clearing. For this plan to be successful, the students must solve a range of programming tasks.

In this module, students will work in teams and learn basic algorithmic thinking and simple block-based programming. This module is suitable for ages 9 - 11.

Up in the Air With Numbers
Have you ever dreamed about being a pilot? Do you want to learn how to fly? Did you know that pilots have to use math every day? Learn the basics of converting units of distance, time, and speed in this exciting module.

Work together to use your new math skills to plan your flight route around sights in beautiful northern Norway. Then, fly your personal plan in a full-motion professional flight simulator! This module is designed for ages 13 - 16.

Robots and Circumference
Do you want to know how to program a robot to do work for you? Did you know that robots can help us calculate how big a circle and other shapes are?

In this module, students will work with EV3-Robots to solve these challenges. These challenges will also require teamwork and creative exploration to choose the best strategies for meeting the day’s goals. This module is suitable for ages 10 - 12.

Electrical Energy: Renewable and Non-Renewable Sources
How does the world get its energy?  What kind of electricity powers our lives? In this module, students will learn and experience how to produce electrical energy from renewable energy sources, such as water and wind.

Students will also learn about non-renewable electrical energy sources by exploring how a steam engine works. This important information will kick-start understanding of how electricity affects our resources and our future. This module is designed for students aged 13 - 16.
